Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that require careful handling. This guide covers dilution, application methods, what to avoid, and the most common mistakes beginners make.
A single 5ml bottle of essential oil typically contains the aromatic compounds extracted from an enormous amount of plant material — it takes approximately 250 pounds of lavender flowers to produce just 1 pound of lavender essential oil. This concentration is what gives essential oils their potency, and also what makes them potentially hazardous if used incorrectly.
The most common essential oil injuries include: chemical burns from undiluted application, allergic sensitization from repeated undiluted contact, respiratory irritation from excessive diffusion in unventilated spaces, and accidental ingestion (particularly by children). None of these are theoretical — they are documented in medical literature and reported regularly to poison control centers.
Used correctly, essential oils are extremely safe and genuinely beneficial. This guide tells you exactly how to use them correctly.
Every essential oil — without exception — should be diluted in a carrier oil before skin application. A carrier oil is a vegetable-derived oil used to dilute essential oils while "carrying" them into the skin. Common carrier oils include fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and castor oil.
| Application | Dilution | Drops per 30ml carrier |
|---|---|---|
| Adults (body) | 2% | 12 drops |
| Adults (face) | 1% | 6 drops |
| Children 6–12 | 1% | 6 drops |
| Elderly / sensitive | 0.5–1% | 3–6 drops |
| Spot treatment only | Up to 5% | 30 drops (max) |
The safest method for most people. Add 5–10 drops to a 100–300ml ultrasonic diffuser with water. Run for 30–60 minute intervals with breaks. Always ensure the room is ventilated — especially if children, pets, or pregnant women are present. Keep diffusers out of reach of children and pets.
Safe diffusion oils for beginners: Lavender, lemon, orange, frankincense, cedarwood. All of these from the Handcraft Blends collection have excellent safety profiles for diffusion.
Always dilute first (see table above). Apply to the target area and massage gently. Avoid the eye area, inner ears, and broken skin. Wash hands after applying. For massage, use a base of 30ml carrier oil with 6–12 drops of essential oil.
Add 2–3 drops to a bowl of hot (not boiling) water. Place a towel over your head and the bowl. Inhale for 5–10 minutes with eyes closed. This is particularly effective for respiratory support with eucalyptus or peppermint. Do not do this with young children — the steam can cause burns and the intensity can overwhelm young airways.
| Oil | Key risk | Precaution |
|---|---|---|
| Peppermint | Not safe for children under 10; can cause breathing problems | Keep away from children; avoid face application |
| Eucalyptus | Similar to peppermint — not for children | Use in ventilated rooms only |
| Clary Sage | May stimulate uterine contractions | Avoid during pregnancy |
| Cinnamon bark | Highly irritating to skin even diluted | Maximum 0.05% dilution for skin |
| Lemon / citrus | Phototoxic — increases UV sensitivity | Avoid sun exposure for 12+ hours after skin application |
| Oregano | Extremely caustic — "hot" oil | Treat as medication, not wellness product |
If you get undiluted essential oil in your eyes, do not rinse with water — apply a carrier oil (like olive oil) first to dilute, then rinse with water. Water alone can push essential oil deeper into the eye. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
If essential oil touches skin and causes burning: apply carrier oil immediately to dilute, then wash with soapy water. Cool the area if needed. Do not apply ice directly.
For ingestion: contact Poison Control immediately (1-800-222-1222 in the US). Do not induce vomiting.
1. Always dilute before skin application. 2. Patch test before first use. 3. Never ingest without professional guidance. 4. Keep out of reach of children and pets. 5. Ventilate the room during diffusion.
Read our Full Beginner's Guide → Shop Handcraft Blends →Most essential oils should never be applied undiluted to skin. They are highly concentrated plant extracts — lavender oil is about 1,000 times more concentrated than the actual plant. Undiluted application can cause burns, irritation, and sensitization (a permanent immune reaction). The only exceptions where tiny amounts of undiluted application may be acceptable for most adults are lavender and tea tree, and only as spot treatments.
Use a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil. The standard dilution ratio for adults is 2% — approximately 12 drops of essential oil per 30ml (1 oz) of carrier oil. For children aged 6–12, use 1% (6 drops per 30ml). For facial application, 1% is recommended even for adults. For a single-use bath blend, add 10–15 drops to a tablespoon of carrier oil before adding to bathwater.
Many essential oils are not safe for young children. Peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary should be avoided for children under 10 due to their menthol and camphor content, which can cause breathing difficulties. For children under 2, diffuse only properly diluted lavender or Roman chamomile, and only in well-ventilated rooms. Always consult your pediatrician before using essential oils with infants.
Essential oils should not be ingested unless under the direct supervision of a qualified healthcare professional or certified aromatherapist with clinical training. Ingesting even small amounts of certain oils — peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree — can be toxic. Claims that certain brands' oils are safe to ingest are not supported by mainstream aromatherapy organizations including NAHA and the IFPA.
Avoid or use with extreme caution during pregnancy: rosemary, clary sage, jasmine, cinnamon, basil, sage, thyme, and peppermint (especially first trimester). These may stimulate uterine contractions or affect hormone levels. Lavender and frankincense in small amounts via diffusion are generally considered the safest options during pregnancy, but always consult your OB or midwife before use.
