Organic Cold-Pressed Castor Oil: What the Label Means and Which to Buy

By HandcraftReview Editorial · September 2026 · 8 min read

Castor oil bottles on Amazon stack the same four phrases: organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free, 100% pure. Some of those words are worth paying attention to and one of them is often stretched. This guide explains each, then lists the bottles we would pick, with what each maker actually says about its own oil.

Short answer: the phrase that matters most is hexane-free, because it rules out solvent extraction. For brows, lashes and hair, any hexane-free castor oil in a bottle you like is fine. If you specifically want cold-pressed, check the maker's own page: even within one brand, the words on the label and the method described can differ.

The four label words, decoded

Hexane-free

Some seed oils are pulled out of the crushed seeds with hexane, a petroleum solvent, which is later removed. "Hexane-free" means the oil was pressed mechanically instead. For something you put on your eyelids or scalp every night, this is the claim worth looking for.

Cold-pressed vs expeller-pressed

Both are mechanical. Expeller pressing squeezes the seeds in a screw press, which builds up heat from friction. Cold pressing is the same idea with the temperature kept low. People prefer cold-pressed because heat can change delicate compounds, though castor oil's main fatty acid, ricinoleic acid, is fairly stable. Either way, no solvent is involved.

USDA Organic

This one is regulated. A product carrying the USDA Organic seal must be certified by an accredited certifier, and the USDA Organic Integrity Database lets you look up certified operations. "Organic" without the seal is weaker.

100% pure

Nobody checks this phrase. Read the ingredient list instead: it should say only castor oil (Ricinus communis seed oil).

Regular vs Jamaican black castor oil

Regular castor oil is pale yellow and pressed from raw seeds. Jamaican black castor oil comes from beans that are roasted, ground and boiled, which leaves ash in the oil and makes it dark. Both are mostly ricinoleic acid. The black version smells stronger, is messier, and is usually kept for the scalp rather than near the eyes. For lashes, our castor oil for eyelashes guide sticks with the pale kind.

Handcraft Blends Organic Castor Oil, 16 oz bottle
USDA Organic and hexane-free

Handcraft Blends Organic Castor Oil, 16 oz

Handcraft Blends lists this oil as USDA Organic, expeller-pressed and hexane-free on its own site. Note the word expeller: it is mechanically pressed, not cold-pressed, whatever a listing headline elsewhere may say. For brows, lashes and hair that difference is small, and the 16 oz bottle lasts a long time.

How to use castor oil without making a mess

Castor oil is thick. A little goes a long way, and too much ends up on your pillow. For brows and lashes, use a clean spoolie and wipe off the excess first; our eyebrow and eyelash guides have the full routine. For the scalp, many people thin it with a lighter oil such as fractionated coconut oil. For castor oil packs, see how to do a castor oil pack.

Patch test first: a small amount on the inside of your arm, then wait a day. Stop if you get redness or itching.

Questions

Is organic castor oil better than regular?

Organic certification covers how the castor plants were grown. It says nothing about extraction. A hexane-free oil without the organic seal can still be a sensible choice. If you want both, look for the USDA seal and the word hexane-free together.

What does cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil mean?

The oil was squeezed out mechanically at a controlled low temperature, and no chemical solvent was used. It is the combination most people look for when the oil goes near their eyes.

Can I use castor oil from the pharmacy?

Pharmacy castor oil is often sold as a laxative. Check the label: if it is labelled for internal use, it is a different product category, and many are not described as cold-pressed or hexane-free.
